CBN vs CBD: How are They Different?

There are hundreds of cannabis compounds that have been identified, but only a handful have been given the attention they deserve.

Researchers have found that CBN has some therapeutic benefits. It is worth further research to compare the CBD and CBN differences. Although both cannabinoids have a lot of popularity, they offer distinct therapeutic benefits.

CBN and CBD may look very similar molecularly, but they are two completely different compounds. Both CBD and CBN have similar therapeutic potential. We will take some time to review them and determine if they can provide you with the relief that you are looking for.

What is CBN?

Cannabinol or CBN is a cannabis compound. It’s also known for its non-intoxicating properties. Cannabidiol (or CBD) is also a cannabis cannabinoid. CBN is a byproduct of degrading tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. This means that THC becomes CBN when it ages and degrades into an older compound.

CBN vs CBD – Oxidation

Let’s take a look at oxidation. Many cannabinoids found in cannabis can be oxidized into different compounds depending on their composition. There are many ways that oxidation can occur. We will discuss the most common forms of oxidation, which are

-Light exposure
-Time

To force the oxidation process, manufacturers can expose THC-rich plants to intense UV lighting. The THC slowly becomes CBN as a result of prolonged UV exposure. This results in a CBN-rich product. This is a picture of a UV lamp being used to expose impurities in minerals. It emits a blue-ish spectrum, which is similar to a dark light.

The key to the conversion of THC into CBN is time. THC will eventually degrade and become CBN. CBN can exist in high amounts depending on how old the plant is. Because we cannot (unfortunately), alter the time, people often use the UV light method for accelerating the oxidation process.

Current levels of CBN in cannabis are determined by environmental factors rather than genetic factors. There are no high-CBN strains currently on the market. This is an interesting area of CBD vs CBN, as there are many high CBD strains.

CBN
Potential Benefits
CBN was the first isolated cannabinoid in its purist form back in 1896,. CBN is believed to be responsible for cannabis’ intoxicating effects.

These effects can be caused by different types of THC, which we now know is true. CBN was originally the culprit! Interesting, isn’t it? This is why CBN is still tightly regulated in certain areas. Researchers discovered that CBN does not produce intoxicating effects by itself.

The topic of CBD vs CBN is still being debated. Human subjects have not been able to fully study the effects of CBN. This is important to remember when you are looking at products containing CBN that claim a lot of medical benefits. They could be true but not enough scientific studies to support them. Let’s now talk about the possible benefits of CBN.

Relieving Effects
Cannabinol is known to have relaxing effects on the brain and body. In a study published in 2011 by the British Journal of Pharmacology, it was found that THC and CBN can produce “tranquilizing effects” in humans. These compounds are responsible in large part for the sedative effects experienced by users of cannabis and marijuana products.

The relaxation of the body was better for older cannabis products or those that have been exposed to more heat and sunlight. This is due to the fact that THC has been converted into CBN (as we discussed earlier).

Older cannabis products have higher CBN levels, which makes them more effective for pain relief. CBN research is being refined almost daily.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-convulsant properties

Researchers discovered that CBD and CBN can work together to provide pain relief. To conduct research properly, scientists will need to create a CBN isolate. This is because a particular strain of heavily CBN-enriched cannabis plants does not exist. This is one of the major obstacles to further CBN-based research. We have made huge breakthroughs in the development of CBD-rich strains in just two years.

CBN may be used as a sleep aid

Although research is still lacking in this area, current results show that CBN could have a positive impact on the treatment of sleep disorders.
